Why is Ice Important?

ice \ˈīs\\īs\ : noun
1. the solid form of water, produced by freezing; frozen water.
2. the frozen surface of a body of water.

Arctic sea ice during winter months grows to the size of the United States. By summer, it shrinks to half that size. At the South Pole, Antarctic sea ice makes up 98 percent of the continent and ice sheets on average are one-mile thick. Antarctic ice holds 70 percent of the entire planet's fresh water supply! The seasonal increasing and decreasing ice levels at both poles affect coastlines and water salinity around the globe.

Annual polar ice cycles impact the climate of the entire planet. As ice levels grow and shrink with the seasons, it pulls and releases water back into the Earth's oceans and atmosphere. What does this mean if the planet warms and more water is released? Get more on Why Arctic Ice is Melting 50 Years Too Fast. >>
