Our crews have organized, practiced safety drills, and are ready to leave Dutch Harbor tomorrow. They have spent the last couple of weeks researching and preparing for a safe and profitable season. Before they can leave port, they will document the weather from NOAA, detail a plan for navigation with latitude and longitude, and head out at the knot speed calculations in order to reach their desired location. Will their hard work pay off? Will their vessels reach crab grounds or will their pots be empty?

Today my crew and I just set sail. We sailed west from Dutch Harbor. We went all the way to 54 degrees lat. and 177 degrees long. We are having a good day so far on the Wizard.

Yesterday we were docked at the port of Dutch Harbor. Then we set sail, but before that, we had to pay for our boat and expenses. Our crew is: Captain – Justin; Senior Deckhand – Kennedy; Deckhand – Kristiane; and Green Horn – Darian. We are a good team, we agree on most everything. We also share our ideas in a calm way. . . most of the time.

Dear Journal, Two days ago we left port. We are traveling with the waves. I am seasick. Hard to imagine the senior deckhand is seasick. Our ship is heading out fine. The food is okay and the water is warm. The blankets are keeping me warm. I am taking pills and am feeling better. Got to go, captain wants me.

We sailed from Dutch harbor. My crew and I are planning to look for the red crab. My name is Mackenzie. I am a greenhorn, so I am kind of new to this. Hopefully I will get the hang of this. We are traveling about ten knots a day and we are going eleven miles an hour. It is kind of windy out, but it is a good thing we are not going against the wind. We think we know where all the crab might be. I hope we will get there before the other ships do. We are prepared for any difficulties. We are well trained. Hopefully nothing bad will happen.

Yesterday on the map we were on 58 degrees N lat. and 177 degrees W long., but today we moved to 59.5 degrees N lat. and 177 degrees W long. The place where we are dropping pots is 775930. That’s our best chance to be catching a lot of crab. As I read, I noticed that king crab like water about 90 to 200 fathoms of deep. I also learned that a fathom equals 1.8 meters. I’ve learned a lot of exquisite, interesting, and amazing facts about Alaska and king crab. I hope our journey is outstanding with the wind and temperature. We haven’t hit any tough waves yet because we’ve mostly gone the direction the waves have been going. But as it continues it gets harder and harder.

We have set sail from Dutch harbor. My crew plans to go west from here. We will drop pots in various places around the west. The two greenhorns don’t get along very well. I hope we find a great spot to fish for crab. This will be a great season I know it!

We have been on this ship five days now. On day one, we saw all the ships, excluding the Wizard. On day two, we came close to land. Today it was extremely windy, so we only traveled 78 miles. We dropped pots today. We are hoping to catch a lot of crab. We don’t think we will catch too many crab because of the wind. Since we haven’t dropped pots yet, we had to do it now. Our crew gets along so well. So far, so good. (Not for long!)

The mighty Maverick just had a break through! We read all our information and moved towards an island. Not too close and not far way. We dropped pots and picked up 8,250 crabs that measured out to 53625 lbs. We’re now traveling. We haven’t hit any storms or danger that is really lucky for us. Captain Justin, Kennedy, the senior deckhand, Darian, the greenhorn, and me, the deckhand, are all excited, but not for long, we are guessing that by the weather there is going to be some rough storms ahead.

We’ve just dropped our first pots and will be letting them soak for the next 24 hours. We are hoping for about 76 crabs in each pot with a weight of 6.5 lbs. each crab. I’ll keep writing to give info on the catches and more.

We just stopped fishing after we dropped all our pots and now we are trying to get a few hours of sleep if we are lucky. Earlier today the greenhorn was loading the bait bag by the rail and accidentally fell overboard. Luckily we got him out before his body shutdown. Then we cleaned up the deck, stored the crab in the hold, and went back to our staterooms. Our captain came in our rooms and told us that we had caught a rare species of crab called tanner. Today was good and fun, but every day is always deadly.

Today we were out on deck all 24 hours. We had to bait the pots. Then we had to drop pots. It was very tiring doing all that work. Right now I'm eating a delicious meal in the galley. Today the wind speed was from 10-15 mph (miles per hour) I was pretty scared working on that starboard side.I wish I could stay longer but I have to go prepare to pull pots. Today was fun and all but, every day is deadly. I'm Zach saying thank you for watching Deadliest Catch Classroom.

Today we found that we had bad bait. So we had to run all the way to an island. The good part about it was that the island was already in the direction we were going. We didn't catch any crab today, but we can't give up! We are closest to the Farwest Leader. We are only 68 miles away from them. All of us caught up on our sleep in the stateroom. I can't wait until we get fresh bait!

Today is a normal day out at sea. Our location is still 58.5 degrees north latitude and 169 degrees west longitude. This morning was a little cloudy out on deck. I am done right now with bait bagging. All of a sudden, Senior Deckhand Aubrianna called me to the deck. We had caught more crab! I quickly did the math for pounds and we are very close to our tank limit. Captain Billy is up in the wheelhouse now heading back to the Dutch processor. I want to take a nap. I'm tired.

Today we are running all day. We are going to 58 degrees north latitude and 166 degrees west longitude. We are going 8 knots and a total of 189 miles. We are just over hundred miles away from Bristol Bay. Tomorrow we are dropping pots all day. Also, our greenhorn is sick. I hope we catch some bugs tomorrow. I think we are in the perfect position to catch some. It is a very cold day at 27 degrees F and southwest winds 15-20 mph.

We just got a call from another boat that their coiler was broken. We are going to take them the piece that they need. They are only 26 miles away. Round trip will by 52 miles. Today is a day we have dropped pots and hopefully we will catch bugs. When we heard about the boat needing help, I said, "Ok, Time Bandit will be there as soon as possible." We were on a run toward the boat. We we pull up our pots tomorrow, hopefully we will catch crab.

Today we are traveling into Bristol Bay. The weather is very harsh and it's 30 degrees F. We are traveling 160 miles to Bristol Bay. The captain is sleeping for 5 hours while Senior Deckhand is in the wheelhouse. We've been running 36 hours straight and the captain needs to take it easy. We have not caught crab in 6 days and when we stop, we are going to drop pots again. I'm on the deck checking the coiler, the block, the bait chopper, and the crane for any damage since I've got some time while we're running.

Today it is mostly cloudy with some rain. From St. George Island, we are running into Bristol Bay, planning to drop some more pots. We've been told by the Time Bandit that they have caught crab in Bristol Bay, so we are going near them. Instead of just 27,000 crab in the holding, we'll have more. We've been running for 36 hours straight, so the Senior Deckhand is going to steer us while I rest. The Deckhand is checking out the pots, the bait, and everything. Hopefully we catch more crab so that I can get my GREEN!

Today we are picking up pots for 24 hours to hopefully catch some king crab.We are going 8 knots today which equals to 9 miles per hour. If we catch some crab today we will have to offload at Dutch Harbor, get some money, and get back to catch some king crab. So far we haven't caught any junk crab which is the kind of crab that's dirty and has barnacles. We are going to keep on picking up pots until night reaches us and we are so exhausted and can' t move our legs and arms. So far we have caught 175,500 pounds of crab in about 5 weeks.

Keoka , Bella , and Jenna on the Wizard. How long does it take to set your pots and everyone is doing a great job. I went out to dinner and had 7 king crab legs after reading these logs at Red Lobster!
