Deadliest Catch Classroom

Introduction to the Deadliest Catch Classroom
Deadliest Catch Classroom - Episode 1

AN ALL NEW DC CLASSROOM EPISODE WILL POST
SOON IN HONOR OF THE SHOW.
ALSO POSTING WILL BE OUR STUDENT WEBISODES,
MATH PAGE, AND SONG LYRICS... Boom De Ah Dah!

Check out the subpages to see how you can help be a part of our Deadliest Catch Classroom. :)

In our classroom, the kids are divided into 8 crews, one for each crab boat in our focus. Each crew will start with a budget (a loan) in order to get their supplies together. It will be up to them to work as a team to have a successful fishing season (3 classroom weeks) in order to recoup their costs and turn a profit.

Each day, crab boats will have to navigate their vessels to various locations in the Bering Sea. They will use real information - maritime data, latitude and longitude, speed/knot calculations, and logs to capture the crab. When they get to a map location where they would like to drop pots, they'll discover if their research and crab savvy will get them the pot loads they hoped for. Each crew has strengths and weaknesses and they never know when a chance event may limit their opportunities. (Can anyone say rogue wave?)

It will all end back at Dutch Harbor where the final crab counts are made and dollar amounts are totaled. We'll see which crew survives (and profits from) the Deadliest Catch!

WOW! What an wonderful response from the fans!! THANK YOU!! My students are very excited and are off to a great start.

I actually never came to this part of the wiki before. I think this is a really really cute idea, what an awesome way to learn. I remember 5th grade pretty well (I'm only 20 after all) and we never did anything as cool as this. I just watched the intro and it was just about the sweetest thing I've ever seen!

Keep up the good work!

AprilCHolloway Ideas for Teaching with Deadliest Catch 5 Apr 29 2008, 9:38 AM EDT by beverycummins

I'm a fifth grade teacher in Las Vegas, Nevada, and I'm working on a thematic unit called Deadliest Catch. In this unit my students are learning all about Alaska, weather, waves, crab fising, industries, etc. We are doing activities with reading, writing, math, science, social studies, and technology. The class is divided into 8 crews and each crew focuses on one crab boat from the show. I'm working to develop "secret" locations for my fictional crab in the Bering Sea and then my crews will need to use latitude/longitude and grids to navigate and locate crab. They will research the real-life crews and hopefully learn enough about the ships and catches to graph data and complete math calculations.

I would love to get my hands on some type of "captain's log" in order to see how they keep data on boat location, crab count and poundage, weather, and such. Maybe some incredible captain or crew member out there would be able to help me out! :)

If you have any ideas for my classroom, I'd love to hear them!
