SYNOPSIS: It's January. As the opilio crab season opens, several greenhorns are about to experience the subfreezing temperatures and icy winter waters of the Bering Sea for the first time. It's a rough start all around. Sig's pots are battered by rough weather and sea lions; Phil loses his processor and has to shut down his fishing. The Time Bandit bets the farm on a secret location where there may be no crab at all.

VICTORIES
  • The Crab processor, Stellar Sea, catches on fire and must head to Dutch for major repairs. Many crab boats have contracts to offload their Opies only at this processor so they must all adjust their plans. The Time Bandit and Farwest Leader switch to Baradi's, the Wizard keeps fishing Opies and the Cornelia Marie drops her pots and then heads to St. Paul to wait until the processor is fixed and they have a place to take their crab.

  • The Northwestern Had stored their gear off St. George Island and the sea lions decided to use their diver bags as toys popping them. This cost them a lot of time and a bit of money to replace all the lost and damaged gear.







MOST HAIR-RAISING MOMENTS
  • The Coast Guard has to medivac a crew member off a fishing boat who is in bad shape and throwing up blood.
