MSN.COM: ?
Apr 21 2008, 12:12 PM EDT Uhhhhhh......did anyone read the article on msn.com this morning? They said the wave that hit the Wizard and the leak in the boat didn't happen on the same day. They had a quote from the producer though, and he said that a wave did cause the leak, they just didn't have footage of that one, so they used footage from a previous wave hitting the boat to tie the story together. (According to this article the wave we saw happened in September and the leak in October). I don't know how I feel about that...is it bad that they did that? 6 out of 9 found this valuable. Do you? |

The fact remains that this is a dangerous job. I have no doubt that the story actually happens, in what order it happens or on what day of the week or month doesn't matter to me. These guys are incredible. 1 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you? |

RE: MSN.COM: ?
Apr 21 2008, 2:52 PM EDT That's what I think. We understand that the job is dangerous. I think they were trying to show how the break happened. If they didn't have actual footage of the wave that did it then they found wave footage that could've caused it. I have no problem with it. 1 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you? |

Apr 21 2008, 4:02 PM EDT I'm glad that everyone feels like that, it's how I felt too, I just wanted to see what everyone thought. I really think that the show does a good job showing what crab fishing is really like, I don't think the guys that are on the show would agree to do it if it was fake, they all seem awfully honest to me. I don't want anyone to get the wrong idea about what I said concerning the MSN article, I wasn't being critical of DC, I don't know if it came across that way, but I didn't mean for it to. (I'm still new at this site so I feel weird sometimes about posting stuff because I'm scared that people will get the wrong idea :( ) Also, it was really early this morning and I had just finished a research paper for school so I was tired and all confused LOL. I don't usually participate in discussions, and I definitely don't go to chat rooms. I don't have the patience for them. But I love the show and neither my husband nor my son watches it as often as I do. So I decided to check out the website a couple weeks ago. I like it because it is not like a chat room. I wouldn't worry too much about what people think of you. It is more important to know what you think of yourself. I also know how it is when you FINALLY finish a paper. They can take a lot of of you. I have three classes left before I get my bachelor's degree in accounting and business management. Good luck in school and I am sure we will talk again. RE: MSN.COM: ?
Apr 21 2008, 8:21 PM EDT I wouldn't worry about this, either. This show *is* real, it isn't like The Hills or any other so-called reality show that casts people and has a script! Still, this is a great topic for discussion, so don't feel you can't bring things like this up! :) Do you find this valuable? |

Apr 21 2008, 11:28 PM EDT I'm ok with it! Don't think it's a big deal. I'm glad they include us on info such as this! It is good to show "how" things happen as well as "when" they happen. Do you find this valuable? |

RE: MSN.COM: ?
Apr 22 2008, 1:21 AM EDT I don't think it's bad. It'd be one thing to say it happened and then finding out it didn't, as opposed to this. I don't think they have the cameras running as much as they do on runs up to Dutch Harbor as they do when it's actually the seasons ya know? I would think too it might take time for a leak to develop depending on how the wave hit, and just looking at the seas they WERE in, repeated hits are what probably eventually caused the leak. I don't see it as a big deal. The whole series is a compilation of weeks at sea with what is it 7 or 8 different boats, days are missed and not every little thing that happens makes it onto the show. It doesn't diminish the danger these guys face just GETTING up to Dutch Harbor and the danger of crab fishing on the Bering Sea. I read the article and laughed...maybe it was creative editing, but it doesn't take away from the fact that a wave (or repeated waves) cause a LEAK in a bigass boat like that and is a danger as the season goes on. Apr 22 2008, 3:38 PM EDT And to begin with. We don't know the Wizard's side of the story. For all we know the leak happened on the way up, but the waves we saw add insult to injury and started flooding the stateroom. Do you find this valuable? |

Apr 22 2008, 11:15 PM EDT Doesn't anyone remember that wave? I thought it looked familiar from a previous season. Hey! Look at porn and movies sometimes they air a shot twice to fill time and hope that noone catches it! We're not stupid but it still happens! Do you find this valuable? |

Apr 24 2008, 11:47 PM EDT I really don't think it is bad for the producers to piece together clips to illustrate the point. I think that if they made a bold faced lie, and used some footage from something else, jus to add to the episode, that would be a problem, unless they specified that this was a fictitous episode, or story line. The leak happened, there was a wave, they didn't have footage of it, they put some in. I think we are watching too much CSI, too! The devil is in the details, and if you look too close, you WILL find something you don't like. The show is fun, it is dramatic, it is real, kinda take it at face value, and enjoy it! RE: MSN.COM: Show is faked?
May 14 2008, 11:50 AM EDT The producers do need to start watching themselves more closely. A scene in last night's episode (aired May 13, 2008) had Captain Sig growing/shaving/re-growing his beard in less than 30 seconds. While it may be acceptable professionally to splice scenes together this way, the obvious gaffe broke the spell of the show. It would have been better to have Mike Rowe change his narration to say "Later, after he’s given it some thought during a shower and a shave, Sig decides to run his decision past his crew." The audience does not need to be fooled into thinking events happen in perfect sequence. They don’t and won’t. These guys are out in the middle of the Bering Sea, not sitting on a dock fishing for bluegills. The men in this show are real, take real chances with their lives and they deserve nothing but great respect from the producers and the Discovery Channel. And that respect should be shown by honest editing. Some critics complain the cameras are too intrusive and do not make for ‘real television’. The fans see it as a blessing, allowing them to invest a little of themselves into the lives of these courageous men. The viewer not only cares about the crab count, they care deeply about the human beings on those boats. And the show would be much less without Edgar Hansen’s or Jake Harris’ direct-to-the-camera comments on their captains and jobs. Those captured moments gives us incredible insight into the relationships they have with their captains as family and crewmates, and it brings wonderful humor to an otherwise dramatic show. My advice to the Deadliest Catch producers before they ruin the show with overzealous editing – stick to the formula. Northwestern + Cornelia Marie + Time Bandit + Mike Rowe = success. Remove “edit to taste” and replace it with “accurate narration”. Stir it altogether. Let it sit for another season or two. Now - shut up and fish. ;) 3 out of 3 found this valuable. Do you? |

May 15 2008, 8:29 AM EDT You know they could chop the show to pieces all they want it doesent bother me as long as it airs I dont mind and besides if they just said a big wave hit something doesent it show a better explanation if you actually see it. Do you find this valuable? |

May 24 2008, 7:26 PM EDT "And to begin with. We don't know the Wizard's side of the story. For all we know the leak happened on the way up, but the waves we saw add insult to injury and started flooding the stateroom. "I think there was an interview that Keith did for KIRO news radio and he explain that they don't have the crew with the boat all of the time. He also said that there are people that don't believe that the waves up there get that big. If the leak didn't happen why was it show him doing a tempority repair on the boat? You don't do things like that for show, you do things like that with serious issues. Do you find this valuable? |
