RE: Job?
Monday, 5:43 AM EDT During our chat with Edgar, he said it is really hard to get a position on a boat because the people who work on them aren't giving up the job. I would assume you have to know someone or you would have to work your way up slowly. Do you find this valuable? |

Monday, 11:41 AM EDT "what is the best way to get a job on a good ship crabbing? Ive heard starting at a prosessor...how long does that usally take to move from prosessor to a ship?"I used to help crab Chesapeake tributaries with my Uncle Stuffy: an Eastern shore waterman for 60 years of his life. He ran strings of blue-crab pots commercially. I dont know where in the country you are from...or how much you have been on the water, but here is a description of what THAT can be...just to see if you might like it. from an East Coast point of view: Go out on a Bay connected to the Ocean. I suggest the Raritan Bay because thats where I live. Do it on a miserable rainy day. Rent a skiff and take it out from 8-5 PM. Take along a loudmouthed sarcastic friend who will sit in the bow of the skiff and criticise everything you do. work your way out to the middle of the bay. Stand up between the gunwhales and see how your balance is. See if you eventually get seasick. Meanwhile take a cement block tied to a rope >> lower the rope to the bottom and raise it back to the boat over and over, for ...lets say...a couple hours... with your bare hands to simulate deck work. Wait for the (typical) afternoon wind and that comes down the Bay. Deal with that for awhile getting wet. Eat your lunch and dinner out there. Come back in the dark and stow your gear. So thats summer. Thats the Bay...not even the Ocean....and you still haven had to deal with any of the "catch" that will 'pinch' the living sh*t out of you unless your wearing welders gloves. Now, If this was no problem...and you want to take the next step: real ocean fishing...Belfort has a small fleet you can probably pay the crew of the Dianne Lynn a fee to go out on their next trip to the continental shelf for three or four days on the Atlantic....In the summer....when its nice....and bust your butt 14 hours a day. I would guess you'd have to multiply that experience by 100 = Alaska Crab fishing Do you find this valuable? |
