May 31 2008, 12:45 PM EDT If these guys are grabbing armloads of crabs and jamming them into the holding tanks,how do they get an accurate crab count?Also,How do they know if there is the right size crabs and right spieces like Opilio anf tanner?I mean these guys are grabbing armloads of crab and jamming them into the holding tanks and them calling the captain with a number of crabs per pot. May 31 2008, 1:16 PM EDT What we don't always see is all the sorting that's done...remember everything is edited down drastically. From what I gathered (they showed this on the Northwestern this King Crab season)....each deckhand sorts out what they do, and gives the nubmers to one person who totals it and tells the captain. They use those white plastic mesuring things to determin what's "legal" and what's not, lots of times it's obvious one is plenty big enough so it'd be a waste of time to measure it and they just count it and put it in the "keeper" pile. you see the green horns taking longer too cause they're still learning the different types, but for the "old salts" it's probably as easy as counting to 10 anymore lol 5 out of 5 found this valuable. LOL"That's a good question! They must grab a pile and count their own pile. Then add up all of their totals and tell the captain. Of, course all of that doesn't get on camera. A lot can happen very quickly on those boats and they have to edit it all into a one hour program WITH COMMERCIALS! I'm glad it's not my job. (<: 3 out of 3 found this valuable. Do you? |

After the newest show on Tuesday I realized that Keith IS good, he just is a bit gruff.
